production editors (2 open positions)

expected commitment level: 5 hours on production weeks, 10-15 hours on non-production weeks

this is a new role at the gargoyle! the production editors digitally edits the scanned flats on photoshop to get the issue ready to the printer. the production editors are also in charge of managing the front and back covers (and possibly a regular centerfold). photoshop and indesign experience is recommended.

standard duties:

  • divide up the responsibilities for each issue (who edits what section, etc)
  • edits each flat (20-32) on photoshop according to the gargoyle’s style guide
    • ensure collages align with the gargoyle’s editorial vision and practices (editing out anything that needs to be)
  • compile the issue on indesign
  • manages front and back cover submissions
    • communicating with contributors via the garg email, accepting proposals, setting deadlines, and rejecting proposals
  • collages a theme relevant centerfold during production night

communications editor (1 open position)

expected commitment level: 5-10 hours each week

this is a new(ish) role at the gargoyle! the communications editor is responsible for, you guessed it, the gargoyle’s communications, including the website, instagram, discord, and email. wordpress experience is a plus, but not necessary!

standard duties:

  • manages the website
    • keeps information up to date
    • posts the issues online once they are distributed
  • makes discord announcements
  • manages the Instagram
    • collages the call for subs posts during production night
    • posts the issue once it is online
    • responses to dms
  • writes and sends out the call for submissions once every two weeks through the website
  • if you are interested, runs the gargoyle’s new backwash blog, the gargle
    • the communications editor has full editorial control over the blog posts
    • organizing staff vote for featured articles to post in the gargle

section editors (7-8 open positions)

expected commitment level: 10-15 hours on production weeks, 5 hours on non-production weeks

our section editors compose the bulk of the masthead and are the individuals responsible for making the gargoyle the publication that it is! each section has 2 co-editors who work together in order to produce and edit content for each of our 13 issues.

standard duties:

  • writes pitches (<75 words) for the upcoming issue theme
  • develops the editorial vision for your own section
    • communicates with contributors via the garg email, accepting proposals, setting deadlines, and rejecting proposals
    • writes pieces for your own section (must have at a page for your section if there are no submissions)
  • developmentally edits each accepted article
    • does interactive edits with the writer
  • ensures all section pieces are ready for copy editors on time
  • attends production night and oversees section flats
    • formats articles to get the document ready to print
    • communicates with prod managers to print articles
    • does not leave production night until all flats within their sections are collaged, either through contributors, others at prod night, or collaging it yourself
  • maintains regular communication with the rest of the masthead via discord
  • attends editorial meetings when necessary

section specific information:

politics (1-2 open positions)

  • politics section editors must be very aware of the gargoyle’s editorial vision and practices to flag potentially problematic articles
  • often helps advise masthead on equity-sensitive pieces

uc (1 open position, looking for xarnah’s co-editor!)

  • uc either has all pages filled or absolutely no submissions — be prepared to write an article on the fly!
  • keeps up with the uclit
  • volume 71 may hire a uc first year columnist in the fall, so the uc editors would oversee that as well

opinions (2 open positions)

  • one of the most broad sections at the gargoyle, be prepared to edit a whole range of articles
  • opinions articles still need a core argument, ensures that argument and the writer’s personal voice really shines through with opinions pieces!

arts & culture (1 open position, looking for florence’s co-editor!) 

  • arts & culture editors in particular are encouraged to review arts & cultures events around toronto (can be reimbursed for article expenses)! this includes theatre, books, galleries, etc

avant garg (1 open position, looking for yujin’s co-editor!)

  • avant typically has more submissions at one time than any other section
  • keep in mind, editing prose and poetry is a very different skill set than traditional articles

comics (1 open position, looking for vanessa’s co-editor!)

  • comics can do whatever they want
  • keep in mind, editing comics is wildly different than text based edits
  • also be prepared to create submissions on the fly!

lead copy editor (1-2 open positions)

expected commitment level: 10-15 on production weeks, 5-10 on non-production weeks

this is a new(ish) role at the gargoyle! the lead copy editor(s) manage the copy editors and are the main point of communication with the eic team.

standard duties:

  • manages the copy editors
    • trains new copy editors at the beginning of the year
    • assigns articles to copy editors each issue
    • organizes ce meetings
  • reviews the ce edits before eic edits
  • communicates with eic about progress/any delays
  • proofreads scanned flats to catch any swapped text blocks or mistakes
    • flags errors to the production editors

copy editors (5 open positions)

expected commitment level: 5-10 hours on production weeks

copy editors are expected to edit pieces a few days before production and correspond with section editors and eic to tune pieces before they are ready for printing.

standard duties:

  • copy edits ❤
    • no spelling or grammar errors, wordiness is removed, consistent with the garg’s editorial style, and the source sheet is checked
  • edits assigned articles by the timeline
  • attends production nights
