how to pitch!

so you want to write for the greasiest paper on campus — we take deep-dives into internet culture, political interrogations on today’s society, sketches of your brain, examinations of u of t and the institutions here, poems about how odd it is to be anything at all. if you have an idea, shoot it our way. if you want to get involved but haven’t drummed anything up, look out for our call for submission emails that have prompts for each section.

what to include

first things first, introduce yourself. the subject line of your email should read [issue x, proposal for x section, your name]. for example: issue 4, proposal for opinions, miran tsay.

the body of your email should include the premise of your pitch, whether that is an article thesis or a description of your comics sketch. for articles, a walkthrough of your foundation and any fleshed out ideas you have help section editors get a better idea of your thoughts. you can include a rough draft, jot notes, rambles, quotes from sources, any lines that you have.

in addition, if you haven’t contributed to the garg before, feel free to attach a 200 word sample of previous work for our section editor’s consideration or an art portfolio/a few works.

sample pitch

issue 4, proposal for opinions, miran tsay

dear nandini and ola,

i’m pitching an article that ranks all the noodles i can make. udon was the first reciepe i ever learned to cook and i can’t seem to shake it. i’ve also amassed recipes for ramen, cheungfun, soba, and i want to describe the ins and outs of each kind — the variation in spicies and ingredients, company at the table, and locations where you get them. as master oogway says: “quit, don’t quit…noodles.”

estimated wordcount: 1000 words

linked below is my rough draft.

let me know if this is something you’d be interested in!

regards,
miran tsay
